Eth Vehera Stupa: The Majestic Summit of Mihintale Monastery

Perched atop the highest point of Mihintale’s mountain range, Eth Vehera (also known as the Stupa of the Elephant) offers breathtaking views and a serene spiritual retreat away from the main pilgrim path. This ancient stupa, shrouded in history and natural beauty, is a hidden gem within the sacred Mihintale complex.

A Stupa Steeped in Mystery and History

While the exact origins of Eth Vehera remain unclear, ancient inscriptions provide fascinating clues about its past:

  • weathered slab inscription from King Vasabha’s reign (65–109 CE) mentions the restoration of Eti Chethiya, suggesting the stupa was already ancient by that time.
  • Another rock inscription near the stupa, possibly from King Sri Naga II’s era (244–246 CE), records the construction of steps leading to the stupa by the king’s descendants.
  • Later, King Mahinda IV (956–972 CE) documented the administration of Eth Vehera’s monastery, revealing its connection to the Abhayagiri Sect and its independence from other Mihintale temples.

Despite its modest size (with a 27-meter base diameter), Eth Vehera holds great significance. The name itself—Eth Vehera—has sparked theories about its role in Mihintale’s monastic history, though its true origins remain a mystery.

The Journey to the Summit: A Trek Through Nature and Time

The climb to Eth Vehera is an adventure in itself:

  • A long flight of ancient steps winds through lush forests, alive with monkeys and birdsong, creating a peaceful yet vibrant atmosphere.
  • As you ascend, the tree cover thins, revealing sweeping vistas of Mihintale’s sacred sites, including Maha Seya, Ambastala, and Aradhana Gala.
  • The final stretch involves rock slabs with carved footholds, adding an element of exploration before reaching the summit.

From the top, the 360-degree panoramic view is nothing short of spectacular. On a clear day, you can spot:
Kaludiya Pokuna – The famous black-water pond reflecting the mountains.
Rajagiri-kanda – A striking rock formation in the distance.
The entire Mihintale monastery complex, bathed in golden morning light.
