Buduruwakanda Rajamaha Viharaya: Galgamuwa’s Hidden Mountain Sanctuary

A Sacred Legacy Carved in Stone

Nestled in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, the Buduruwakanda Rajamaha Viharaya stands as a proud testament to the island’s ancient Buddhist heritage. Believed to have been established by King Valagamba (89-77 BCE), this temple is perched atop a towering rock formation, offering breathtaking views and a deep spiritual aura.

A Temple Shrouded in Legend

🔹 The Golden Reclining Buddha Mystery

·         According to folklore, the temple once housed a golden reclining Buddha statue inside a rock cave.

·         A massive rockfall later sealed the entrance, trapping the sacred statue inside—visible remnants of the collapsed rocks still lie near the new temple complex.

·         The name "Buduruwakanda" (Buddha Image Mountain) originates from this legendary golden Buddha.

🔹 Revival by Venerable Herathgama Siri Upanda Thero

·         After centuries of neglect, the temple was restored under the guidance of the current chief incumbent.

·         Today, it serves as both a spiritual retreat and a historical treasure.
