Sangamitta Stupa: A Sacred Tribute to the Pioneer Buddhist Nun of Sri Lanka

Just 130 meters east of the iconic Thuparamaya Dagoba in Anuradhapura lies a small yet profoundly significant stupa known as the Sangamitta Stupa. This ancient structure is believed to enshrine the ashes of Theri Sangamitta, the daughter of Emperor Asoka of India and the sister of Mahinda Thero, the monk who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Theri Sangamitta's arrival in Sri Lanka in 249 BCE marked a pivotal moment in the island's spiritual and cultural history, as she brought with her the southern branch of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree from India.

The Legacy of Theri Sangamitta



There Sangamitta played a crucial role in establishing Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Alongside her brother, Mahinda Thero, she worked tirelessly to spread the teachings of the Buddha and nurture the growing Buddhist community. She is particularly revered for founding the Bhikkhuni (nuns') order in Sri Lanka, empowering women to pursue spiritual enlightenment. Her dedication to the Buddhist doctrine and her contributions to the cultural fabric of Sri Lanka have made her a beloved figure in the country's history.

According to the Mahavamsa, the Great Chronicle of Sri Lanka, Theri Sangamitta lived to the age of 59. After fulfilling her duties, she passed away at the Hatthalhaka Nunnery during the ninth year of King Uttiya's reign. King Uttiya, the brother of King Devanampiyatissa, honored her with the same reverence accorded to Mahinda Thero upon his passing. Her body was laid in state for a week, after which she was cremated near Cittasala, east of Thuparama, in a location she had chosen herself. This spot was within sight of the sacred Bodhi tree, symbolizing her deep connection to the Buddhist faith.

The Sangamitta Stupa: A Monument of Devotion

Following her cremation, King Uttiya commissioned the construction of a stupa at the site to enshrine her ashes. Archaeologists believe that the small stupa located 130 meters east of Thuparama is the very stupa mentioned in the Mahavamsa. This identification aligns with the chronicle's description of the location being east of Thuparama and within sight of the Bodhi tree.

For many years, there was confusion among archaeologists regarding the exact location of the Sangamitta Stupa. In the late 19th century, British archaeologists mistakenly identified the Padalanchana Chethiya, located on the grounds of Thuparama, as the Sangamitta Stupa. However, further research and analysis of the Mahavamsa's descriptions have since clarified that the true Sangamitta Stupa lies further east, approximately 130 meters from Thuparama.

The Sangamitta Stupa stands as a testament to Theri Sangamitta's enduring legacy and her invaluable contributions to Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Although the stupa is modest in size compared to the grandeur of Thuparama, its historical and spiritual significance is immense.
