Discovering the Hidden Gem: Galmaduwa Sulugulu Purana Viharaya in Mihintale
Nestled deep in the serene interiors of Sri Lanka, near the historic Mihintale—the birthplace of Buddhism on the island—lies a forgotten treasure: Galmaduwa Sulugulu Purana Viharaya. While Mihintale remains a major pilgrimage site, many of its surrounding ancient Buddhist sites remain unexplored. Among them, Sulugulu Purana Viharaya stands as a silent witness to centuries of devotion and history.
A Temple Shrouded in Legend
According to ancient lore, this temple was established by Sulugulu Upasaka, a devoted layman, during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa (307–267 BCE). The story goes that Maliyadeva Maha Arahath Thera, a revered monk, once visited the upasaka’s Ayurvedic healing center to drink herbal kenda (porridge). While the mixture was still heating, the Thera, using his divine Iddhi powers, transported the upasaka to Tawthisa Heaven to worship Silumina Maha Seya. This mystical encounter led to the founding of this sacred site.
The Ancient Stupa: A Forgotten Relic
The most prominent feature of Sulugulu Purana Viharaya today is an ancient stupa, now covered in wild vegetation. Local tradition holds that this stupa was built to enshrine the ashes of Maliyadeva Thera after his Parinirvana (final passing). Despite its historical significance, the stupa has not undergone any formal conservation efforts.
Nearby, a small modern shrine has been erected, incorporating ancient granite steps and balustrades discovered at the site, offering a glimpse into the temple’s glorious past.
The Lost Tampita Viharaya
In 2017, the Sri Lankan government declared Sulugulu Purana Viharaya a protected archaeological site, recognizing its stupa, remnants of a tampita vihara (a raised wooden meditation hall), and other ruins. However, today, only a few pillar stumps remain, hinting at the existence of a once-magnificent tampita vihara that has since vanished. Why Visit Sulugulu Purana Viharaya?
